Polish passport photos are specified down to the millimetre, which is good news if you like certainty. The format is 35 x 45 mm, and the head must fill 70 to 80 percent of the frame, a proportion the Ministerstwo Spraw Wewnętrznych i Administracji converts into a hard range of 31 to 36 mm from crown to chin. Anything under 31 mm of face height fails, no matter how well composed the rest of the picture is.

There is a second measurement that most photographers outside Poland simply do not know about. Your eyes have to sit between 20 and 30 mm above the bottom edge of the photograph, with the limit relaxed to 15 mm for children up to age 11. What size is a Polish passport photo?

Does the background have to be white?

Not strictly. The MSWiA specification asks for a uniform light background with no shadows or decorative elements, and recommends white or light grey. Light grey, jasnoszary, is genuinely acceptable in Poland, which is not the case in several neighbouring countries.

Where do my eyes need to be in the frame?

Between 20 and 30 mm measured up from the bottom edge of the photo. For children up to 11 years old that lower boundary can drop to 15 mm. This eye line rule is checked at the passport office and is a frequent cause of rejection for photos shot abroad.
